“U.S. exploiting Syria ceasefire” - columnist
The United States is exploiting last week’s United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Syria to shield terrorist groups, said journalist Melih Altınok in a column published in Turkish Daily Sabah.
The exploitation stems from U.S. assertions that the resolution covers the Afrin region in northwest Syria. Afrin has been under a Turkish military assault since Jan. 20. The operation aims to gain control of the region from the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish group that has controlled Afrin since 2012.
The U.N. resolution does not apply to Turkish military activity in Afrin, said Altınok, because the ceasefire does not cover operations against UN Security Council designated terror organisations. The YPG is among such groups, according to Altınok. U.S. suggestions that the U.N. resolution covers Afrin therefore amount to using the resolution as a means of protecting “trapped terrorists in Afrin”.
