The United States sent heavy weapons, armoured vehicles to Syrian Kurds - Sputnik
The United States has just sent 200 trucks filled with weapons and armoured vehicles to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), U.S.-backed Syrian Kurdish forces in the fight against Islamic State, the Russian state-funded news outlet Sputnik reported on Thursday, citing an SDF source.
"The United States has sent us heavy weapons, armoured vehicles and pickup truck. In addition, concrete blocks have been sent to be used in the construction of new military bases. The United States will establish new bases in Deir al-Zor and Hasaka regions," Sputnik quoted an SDF official who talked on the condition of anonymity.
The relations between Ankara and Washington soured with the U.S. support for the SDF, which is mostly comprised of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) partnered with the international coalition forces against the Islamic State. Turkey does not recognise the YPG as a separate entity, saying that it is a Syrian offshoot of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) which has waged decades-long insurgency on Turkish soil.
The shipment occurred amid the discussion of a safe-zone in northern Syria, which Turkey says it must be controlled by Ankara, after the U.S. President Donald Trump announced the defeat of the Islamic State in December.
"The United States will continue to help us," the source said.
