Slain Kurdish lawyer Elçi to be commemorated in southeastern Turkey

Prominent human rights lawyer Tahir Elçi will be commemorated on Thursday, the fourth anniversary of his killing in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır, Mezopotamya news agency reported on Tuesday.

The former president of the Diyarbakır Bar Association was shot dead during a gun battle between the police and unidentified gunmen in Kurdish-majority Diyarbakır four years ago while delivering a speech to advocate peace.

Elçi was speaking in front of the historic minaret in Diyarbakır, which was destroyed during Turkish security forces’ operations in the province’s Sur district, targeting members the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), an armed group that as waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey for Kurdish self-rule. 

Elçi’s murder remains unsolved and his perpetrators have yet to be found.
