Istanbul municipality increases taxi, minibus fares by 11 pct
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) on Wednesday announced an increase of 11 percent in taxi and minibus fares, Birgün newspaper reported.
According to the new rates, the drop charge of taxis has been raised from 5 to 5.55 liras, while the fare per kilometre was hiked from 3.10 liras to 3.45.
Meanwhile, minibus fares for short-distance routes have increased to 2.75 lira from 2.5.
The rate hike follows a meeting between the İBB and Transportation Coordination Centre (UKOME) meeting on Wednesday.
The city’s last price hike for taxi and minibus fares - 25 percent - took place on Aug. 2019.
The presidentof the Chamberof Istanbul TaxiBusinesses told CNN Türkthat the hike failed to meet their expectations.
"We found the price hike of 11 percent by our municipality inadequate,’’ Aksu said. "Our request was for 25 percent.’’
The fare hikes arrive as Turkey’s inflation has accelerated to the highest level since August 2019, registering at 14 percent.
