Turks world’s biggest tea drinkers, says report
Turkey consumes the largest amount of tea in the world with 3.5 kilograms of tea per person annually, according the latest report by the International Tea Committee (ITC), a non-profit organisation which is an official source for tea statistics.
Meanwhile, China tops the list of tea-producing nations in the world, the ITC said, noting the country accounted for 42.6 percent of global production with 2.27 million tonnes in the last year. China is followed by India, which produced around 1.27 million tonnes.
Turkey placed fifth in the world for tea production with 259,000 tonnes of tea over the past year, the NGO’s report noted.
Eighty-six percent of the world's tea production takes place in Asia; 11 percent in Africa and three percent on other continents, it said.
Global tea consumption and production are projected to keep rising over the next decade, according to the ITC, due to an increasing demand in developing and emerging countries.
