Reading of play banned in Turkey forced offline
A planned reading of a one-man play that had been banned in provinces across Turkey was prevented by the temporary suspension of the actor’s Twitter account on Monday evening, left-wing news site Sendika.org said.
But other simultaneously broadcast readings of the play “Just the Dictator” by theatre groups throughout Turkey, including one in Kurdish, continued on Twitter over Periscope in defiance of the censorship, the site said.
Actor Barış Atay, who got his account back a few hours after the incident, likely had his account suspended due to large numbers of government supporters reporting it for violations of the site’s rules.
The episode is reminiscent of left-wing actor Genco Erkal’s play “Every Day Anew From the Beginning” which became a cause célèbre after it was banned by the military junta in the wake of Turkey’s 1980 military coup.
