Record number of Russian tourists visit Antalya – report
Russian toursits visiting Turkey’s southern region of Antalya rose to a record last year, Milliyet newspaper reported citing provincial governor Münir Karaloğlu.
The increase in Russian visitors to 3.7 million helped Antalya attract a total of 10.5 million tourists in 2017, a gain of 57 percent on the previous year, Karaloğlu said, according to Milliyet.
Tourism operators and local officials expect 2018 to be a bumper year, with 14 million tourists visiting the region, Karaloğlu said.
The tourism industry in Turkey entered a slump in 2016 amid a series of terrorism attacks and a crisis in relations with Russia prompted by Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian jet flying over its border with Syria.
Targets for 2018 include attracting more visitors from the Middle East, from countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, he said.
