Turkey extends ban on firing workers into 2021
Turkey extended a ban on employers firing workers by two months, according to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Tuesday.
The ban was due to expire on Nov. 17. Government aid for workers put on short working weeks will be extended for the same period, the presidency said.
Turkey’s government introduced the measures to help offset the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household incomes and the economy. It has also engineered a borrowing boom by consumers and businesses, thanks to cheap loans by state-run banks, and instructed the nation’s lenders to defer consumer and corporate debt repayments.
