Turkey unemployment rate falls as fewer people seek work

Turkey’s jobless rate fell in the three months to March as fewer people said they were seeking work.

The number of unemployed totalled 13.6 percent in the three months to March, with February as the weighted month, compared with 13.8 percent in the three months to February, figures published by the Turkish Statistical Institute on Monday showed.

The number of people not in the labour force grew to 31.1 million from 30.4 million, meaning there were more people not working in Turkey than gainfully employed or seeking work. The labour force comprised 30 million people.

Non-farm unemployment dropped to 15.4 percent from 15.7 percent. The number of young people not in a job or education rose to 26.7 percent from 25.7 percent.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment edged up to 12.7 percent in the three months to March from a previous 12.6 percent.
