Turkish unemployment rate falls to 13.2 percent in July-September
Turkey’s headline unemployment rate declined to 13.2 percent in the July to September period.
The jobless rate fell from 13.4 percent in the three months ending in August, the Turkish Statistical Institute said on its website on Tuesday. Unemployment was 14 percent a year earlier.
But the number of people in employment dropped by 975,000 to 43.9 percent of the eligible workforce from 46.3 percent a year ago, according to the data. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in people without work and no longer seeking employment.
The labour participation rate dropped to 50.6 percent in the July to September period from 53.9 percent a year earlier.
Turkey’s headline unemployment data does not give the full picture of joblessness in the country. The government has barred companies from sacking workers during the coronavirus outbreak. Instead, they are placed on unpaid leave or put on short working weeks.
