TV weather forecasts get better ratings than Erdoğan, says challenger

Muharrem İnce, the main opposition Republican People’s Party’s (CHP) presidential candidate, responded to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s refusal to engage in a live TV debate with him, saying television weather reports attract better ratings than Erdoğan.

“He says ‘I want to get ratings,’ but even the weather forecasts are watched more than his interviews,” İnce said on Sunday during a rally in the Anatolian province of Tunceli, “I’m making my call once again: Let’s talk about the future of our children and let’s talk about education.”

İnce has repeatedly challenged Erdoğan to a live debate in the run-up to twin parliamentary and presidential elections to be held on 24 June.

But Erdoğan rejected İnce’s offer on Saturday, saying in a TV interview, “What will you talk about with a man who says, ‘I oppose Canal Istanbul,’ adding, “He has no shame, inviting me on television.”
