Accession talks with Turkey will end, says top candidate for EU commision

A German politician, the top candidate for the president of the European Commission, on Saturday said he would end the European Union (EU) accession talks with Turkey, Turkish news site Gazete Duvar reported.

“We want a partnership, a friendship, but we must end accession negotiations with Turkey,” said Manfred Weber, the top joint candidate of the German CDU/CSU.

During his campaign launch in Athens on Apr. 23, Weber said he believes that Turkey cannot be a member of the EU due to the Christianity values of the continent.

In a resolution adopted on March 13, 2019, the European Parliament has called for the suspension of EU accession talks with Turkey, citing violations of human rights and the rule of law.

Despite the serious situation, members of the European Parliament expressed their will to keep the political and democratic dialogue open and continue to support human rights defenders, students and journalists to promote and protect democratic values and principles.
