Ten migrants die in crash near Turkey’s border with Greece

Ten migrants were killed when the driver of a van they were travelling in sought to evade police near Turkey’s border with Greece and crashed into a wall.

Thirty other people were injured in the accident, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency reported on Wednesday.

“The vehicle’s driver didn’t heed a warning by the gendarmerie telling them to stop and tried to make a speedy escape, crashing into a shop,” the governor’s office of Turkey’s Edirne province said in a written statement.

Turkey has become the last stop before Europe for hundreds of thousands of migrants travelling from Syria, Afghanistan and north Africa. Ankara has upped security near the border after it pledged to curb the flow of people in exchange for EU financial aid and progress in membership talks.

The immigrants have become unpopular with many Turks as the nation’s economy faltered from years of fast growth, causing unemployment to surge.

Edirne lies on the border with Greece and Bulgaria.
