Turkish coast guard vessels harass Greek fishing boat - report
Two Turkish patrol boats harassed a Greek fishing boat off the island of Oinousses in the eastern Aegean on Thursday, the Greek Reporter said.
According to the Shipping Ministry in Athens, the Turkish coast guard vessels performed dangerous manoeuvres inside Greek territorial waters. The video released by the Hellenic Coast Guard showed a Turkish vessel circling the fishing boat.
The aim of the Turkish vessels was to drive the fishing boat away, the Greek-language daily Politis said in a report.
Kathimerini reported that two Greek coast guard boats were dispatched from the eastern Aegean island of Chios to investigate the fishing boat’s complaint.
A nearby vessel belonging to the European border force Frontex observed the incident but did not intervene, Politis said.
The Turkish authorities have yet to comment on the incident.
Turkey and Greece, longstanding regional rivals, share increasingly tense relations after Ankara urged refugees to leave the country’s for Europe earlier this year. Many cross the Aegean Sea to Greek islands as a stepping stone to mainland Europe.
