Turkey home appliance production in strong recovery – association

Turkish production of home appliances such as washing machines is recovering strongly after global measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus were eased, a sector association said on Tuesday.

Manufacturing of the goods surged by an annual 25 percent in June, said Can Dinçer, head of the White Goods Manufacturers’ Association of Turkey (TÜRKBESD), according to Dünya newspaper. Domestic sales rose by 14 percent annually last month.

“Our factories are working at a high tempo,” Dinçer said. “We are working to ensure goods reach both domestic and foreign markets. We expect to see the same trend in July and August.”

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said this month that he expects to see the economy recover strongly from a downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Turkey is one of the world’s leading producers and assemblers of so-called white goods and their manufacture is an important contributor to economic output.

Domestic sales rose by an annual 4 percent to 3.6 million units in the first half of the year, according to the association. Exports fell by an annual 14 percent to 8.7 million units, it said. Overall sales in the period dropped by 9 percent.

Leading Turkish manufacturers of home appliances include Arçelik, which sells its products abroad via the Beko brand, and Vestel. Turkish firms also produce goods on behalf of foreign companies such as Germany’s Bosch.
