Turkish journalist hospitalised after attack
A columnist with Turkey's Korkusuz newspaper, Ahmet Takan, was hospitalised on Wednesday after being attacked outside his home in Ankara, Turkish daily Sözcü reported.
Takan was assaulted by an unidentified attacker with a baseball bat, Sözcü reported.
The columnist most recently penned an article claiming that the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) may retire soon. His article drew harsh criticism from the MHP with the party's secretary general accusing Takan of being on the payroll of MHP's opponents.
In May, three other journalists were attacked by unknown assailants after their reports on the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and its ally MHP politicians.
Journalists face an oppressive atmosphere in Turkey under the AKP government, which has led the country to the distinction of being the world's leading jailer of journalists for the past three years running.
