Turkish construction workers in Malta go unpaid
Several Turkish builders working for Ankara-based TACA Construction's projects in Malta have not been paid for the last five months, Times of Malta said on Tuesday.
"We are in a very difficult situation here. We have no money left. The boss is not talking to us. He is not interested in any way. We don’t even have enough money to buy a packet of cigarettes," said one construction worker who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions.
The "boss" was someone from TACA Construction, the worker said. "We don’t trust TACA," he added.
Last year, Maltese authorities employed hundreds of Turkish construction workers to work on major private construction projects, involving TACA, across the island.
