International organisation calls for investigation into assault on Turkish journalist

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) on Monday called on Turkish authorities to launch an investigation into an attack on a veteran journalist in Turkey’s southern province of Antalya.

Idris Özyol, a columnist for local newspaper, Akdeniz Yeni Yüzyıl, was found unconscious in the street and later diagnosed with a brain haemorrhage, IFJ said.

The IFJ said it was calling for a full investigation into the case and demanding the government act to ensure journalists' safety.

In May, Özyol was beaten by outside his office by unidentified men and hospitalised. Some five opposition journalists were targeted in a string of attacks within two weeks in the same month.

"The attack came soon after a local ultra-nationalist politician Talu Bilgili from the MHP, Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party, openly threatened the journalist during a public meeting," IFJ said.
