Drowned refugees were Gülenists – Samanyolu news
Three people who drowned while crossing the Maritsa river were followers of Fethullah Gülen, the Islamist cleric blamed for masterminding the failed 2016 coup attempt, according to the Gülen-linked news site Samanyolu.
Samanyolu reports that 37-year-old teacher, Ayşe Söyler and her children, 11-year-old Abdulkadir Enes and 3-year-old Halil Münir were found dead after a boat carrying them and seven others sank while crossing the Maritsa river, near the Greek border. The search is still ongoing for the other passengers.
Söyler had been removed from her position as a teacher by an emergency decree law in the wake of the coup attempt, according to Samanyolu’s news.
Tens of thousands of citizens with alleged links to Gülen have been stripped of their jobs or faced legal action, including prison sentences, since the coup attempt. Many of them have reportedly fled the country to escape similar repercussions.
