Beşiktaş coach Güneş new head of Turkey's national football team
Current coach of İstanbul team Beşiktaş Şenol Güneş will lead Turkey's national football squad as head coach, Turkish NTV news reported on Saturday.
Güneş, who lead the Turkish national squad to third place in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, is set to coach both Beşiktaş and the national squad until his contract with the white and black jerseys is complete at the end of this season, NTV said.
Beşiktaş's current assistant manager Guti Hernandez will take over the team the team temporarily when the 66-year-old Güneş leaves.
Beşiktaş Club Chairman Fikret Orman will share the club’s final decision on Güneş's new role this week.
The seasoned coach will be replacing Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, who stepped in to lead the national squad in the summer of 2017 following national team veteran Fatih Terim who stepped down following controversy over a brawl with a restaurant owner.
The Turkish national football squad has had only four victories, seven losses and six ties this season.
