Twitter apologises for trending anti-Trump hashtag from Turkey
Twitter has apologised and removed a trend originating from Turkey that wished ill on U.S. President Donald Trump, Fox News reported on Tuesday.
The hashtag #MahvolursunTrump, which roughly translates as “you will be destroyed, Trump”, began trending after the U.S. president threatened to “obliterate” Turkey’s economy in a tweet on Monday as tensions over northern Syria continued to simmer.
Mr. Trump you can destroy only USA.— Doğu Perinçek (@Dogu_Perincek) October 7, 2019
Trump sen ancak ABD’yi mahvedebilirsin. #MahvolursunTrump
Doğu Perinçek, the leader of Turkey’s left-wing nationalist Patriotic Party, responded to Trump’s tweet by telling the president, “Mr. Trump, you can destroy only USA.” Perinçek’s tweet appears to have been the source of the hashtag, Fox News said.
Twitter apologised for its mistake in allowing the hashtag to trend, Fox News reported.
“This phrase should not have appeared in trends, and we’re sorry for this mistake. At times, we do prevent certain content from trending and we have done so with this trend," the news outlet quoted an email from Twitter as saying.
