Turkey sends advance forces into Syria – Bloomberg

A small forward group of Turkish forces on Wednesday morning entered northeast Syria, where the Turkish military is expected to launch its “Peace Spring” military operation against Kurdish militants, Bloomberg reported.

Turkey’s Defence Ministry denied the operation had begun, Guardian Middle East correspondent Bethan McKernan said in a tweet. Turkish news site Gazete Duvar reported the same, citing Reuters.

However, Turkish pro-government outlet HaberTürk correspondent Bülent Aydemir quoted high-level military sources as saying the entry of troops was part of a preliminary operation before Peace Spring was launched.

Turkey’s armed forces have been preparing for months to launch an assault to push back the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Ankara views as a terrorist group due to links to Kurdish insurgents in Turkey.

A phone call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday cleared the way for the Turkish operation as Trump agreed to withdraw U.S. forces deployed alongside the SDF.
