Foreign tourist arrivals to Turkey's Antalya hit record high of 15 million
More than 15 million foreign tourists visited Turkey’s southern resort of Antalya in the year to Nov. 20, a record high, Hürriyet newspaper said on Sunday.
Russian tourists led the increase, rising an annual 16 percent to almost 5.5 million in the first 10 months. They were followed by 2.5 million German tourists, Hürriyet reported.
Antalya has also attracted a significant amount of visitors from Ukraine, Britain, Poland and the Netherlands, the newspaper said.
The tourism industry in Turkey entered a slump in 2016 after a failed military coup and during a crisis in relations with Russia prompted by Turkey’s shooting down of a Russian jet flying over its border with Syria. Turkey is seeking to increase revenue from tourism to help offset an economic downturn brought on by a currency crisis last year.
