Turkey tourism visitors fall by 71 percent in January

The number of tourists visiting Turkey dropped by an annual 71 percent in January, according to preliminary figures published by the Tourism Ministry.

Visitors fell to 509,787 last month from 1.79 million in January 2020, the ministry said on Monday.

Turkey is seeking to attract more tourists to the country this year to help bolster economic growth and to earn in vital foreign currency revenues. A slump in income from tourism due to the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a slump in the value of the lira against major currencies last year.

A decline in tourists from France, Iraq, Ukraine and Russia was less than the average, helping to curb the overall decline in visitors, the figures showed.
