Turkey trading Uyghur rights for Chinese loans – Jerusalem Post

Turkey has proven itself to be an unreliable liaison for the persecuted Uyghur minorities in China, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is trading the rights of Muslim minorities in China’s northwestern Xinjiang province for cheap Chinese loans, journalist Diliman Abdulkader wrote in the Jerusalem Post.

In fact, Turkey’s vision of itself as the protector of Sunnis abroad, is nothing but a scam, the article said.

Since ethnic riots in Xinjiang in 2009, China has increased the police presence in the region and established what it calls re-education camps for some 1 million Uighurs, a Turkic Muslim people. In these prison-like camps, Uyghur inmates are subject to physical and mental torture, among other violations.

The Erdoğan who in 2009 publicly accused the Chinese government of genocide, took a sudden u-turn during a visit to China in July, going as far as saying that people in the Xinjiang region were happy, the article said.

This type of hypocrisy, Abdulkader wrote, is fuelled by Turkey’s desperation for a Chinese boost for its ailing economy, tensions with the European Union over Cyprus, and deteriorating ties with the United States over the purchase and delivery of Russian S-400 missiles.

Pointing to what he said was Erdoğan’s hardline approach to the Israeli-Palestinian issue, the Jerusalem Post said, despite being vocal on injustices against Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli state, Turkey continues to enjoy strong economic relations with Israel, receiving billions from Israeli markets.

If Turkey’s strongman was truly concerned about human rights, Abdulkader wrote, Turkey would examine the  "mass atrocities against minorities within its own borders against the more than 20 million Kurds since the founding of the state in 1923”.
