Turkey urges calm, lawful solution over pro-Trump protests in Washington
The Turkish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday said it was closely following the developments in Washington D.C, where supporters of President Donald Trump have stormed the Capitol Bulding, urging calm and lawful solution.
Ankara invites all parties in the United States to use “moderation and common sense’’ in finding a solution to problems, the statement shared on the ministry’s website said.
Chaos has erupted in Washington following a call by Trump for his supporters to fight against the ceremonial counting of the electoral votes that confirmed the victory of President-elect Joe Biden, CNN reported on Wednesday.
“This is treason. This is insurrection. This is rebellion,” says @VanJones68 of pro-Trump rioters. “I have heard people looking at small protests in Portland, Oregon — where people were teargassed, beaten, kidnapped — and they said... ‘We have to have law and order.’” pic.twitter.com/KxnaEEZBjk— CNN (@CNN) January 6, 2021
One person has been shot and authorities have locked down the buildings after the Capitol Building was stormed by protesters.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has advised Turkish citizens to refrain from crowded spaces and areas of demonstration in the U.S. capital.
