Gendarmerie captain arrested over Gülen links

Captain Recep Zerk, director of the Istanbul provincial gendarmerie command’s unit against smuggling and organised crimes, was arrestedt over his alleged links to the Gülen movement, Sabah newspaper reported on Friday.

Turkish government accuses the Gülen movement, a religious group, of orchestrating the coup attempt in 2016 to overthrow the government.

The Turkish police claimed that Captain Zerk had been in touch with senior members of the Gülen movement, which allegedly had an organisational structure in which civilian members were giving instructions to members of the group in Turkey's public service, particularly in the military and the police.

Zerk told the prosecutors that he gave the names of seven people to the police and wanted to benefit from the effective repentance law. Zerk also claimed that he had been harassed by the Gülen movement since 2014, after he had cut his relations with the group.
