Six thousand Turkish university graduates apply to work as janitor

Six thousand university graduates and 8,000 high school graduates are among more than 107,000 people to have applied for 1,500 janitor positions working for the Ministry of Health, Duvar news site reported on Thursday.

Duvar said that in the Turkish capital Ankara alone, more than 3,000 university graduates had applied for 40 vacant janitor positions, while almost 3,000 university graduates had applied in Istanbul, where there are 433 vacancies. The successful candidates will be chosen by lot in late October. 

Youth unemployment in Turkey is 20 percent according to figures announced by the Turkish Statistical Institute in June. Unemployment among young people is higher in urban areas, while youth unemployment rate among those with degrees is also increasing.
