Turkish students lag behind OECD average in key subjects – report

Turkey has fallen behind the OECD average in reading, mathematics and science, according to the organisation's 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report.

Turkey ranked 40th among 77 countries in reading, 42nd among 78 countries in mathematics and 38th among 78 countries in sciences, scoring lower than the OECD average in all areas despite an increase in students’ performance in the subjects, the study found.

Turkey ranked 49th in mathematics among 72 countries and territories, 52nd in natural sciences and 50th in reading, according to the 2017 PISA report.

A total of 6,890 students aged 15-years-old from 186 different schools in Turkey participated in the assessment, which was conducted with over 600,000 students from 79 countries.

Students from China scored the highest in the PISA ranking, followed by Singapore and the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.
