Turkey to replace foreign words with Turkish alternatives
Turkey is preparing to replace foreign words with Turkish alternatives in product descriptions and advertisements, in daily life, and in the names of companies, Daily Sabah reported on Tuesday.
The Turkish Language Association, Turkey’s official regulatory body of the Turkish language, prepared a report intended to reduce the influence of other languages - notably English.
The report, which covered wide scope of every day life from company names to signs, was discussed during a High Advisory Board of the Presidency meeting, chaired by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Legislation will be prepared on the issue and submitted to parliament in the upcoming term, Daily Sabah said.
The report lamented that English words are frequently used in Turkey, especially in the names of companies, hotels, restaurants and shopping malls.
