Turkish space agency to open in 2018

Turkey’s Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank has announced that a Turkish space agency would open by the end of this year, Hürriyet newspaper said.

The space agency will co-ordinate the development of space technologies on a national level and manage Turkey’s international space relations, it quoted Varank as saying.

“We are establishing the Turkish space agency in order to strengthen space industry, to develop scientific foundations and human resources in the field of space technology, and to increase our capacity and abilities even further,” Varank said.

“The work to set it up will be completed as quickly as possible.”

Varank pointed to Turkey’s successes in the field of satellite technology as a sign of the country’s increasing commitment to space.

A new Optical Systems Research Centre, which would research space optics, was also ready to be opened, he said.
