Once a fierce critic, Erdoğan now celebrates 13 million followers on Twitter
In 2014, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared his intention to “stamp out” Twitter, calling the social media network a nuisance.
Today, Twitter is still kicking in Turkey, and Erdoğan has 13.3 million followers on his account, as Turkish news site Diken noted.
“My personal Twitter account follower count has surpassed 13 million,” he said at a meeting discussing digital election campaigning strategy on Thursday. “We take among the top ranks in the world. Our viewership number has passed 12 million,”
On Thursday, Erdoğan announced in a Twitter post his Justice and Development Party (AKP)’s mayoral candidates in 14 cities.
This a far cry from when Erdoğan denounced Twitter for spreading lies during the 2013 anti-government Gezi Park protests. He said then: “This thing called social media is actually right now a pain in the population’s head.”
