Turkish celebrities ignite Twitter with support for opposition in mayor vote rerun

A hashtag used by Turkish celebrities to express support for the opposition candidate in a rerun of polls to elect a new Istanbul mayor next month became a top trending topic on Twitter in Turkey and the world on Tuesday.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party’s Ekrem İmamoğlu won March 31 mayoral polls by a narrow margin, but President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling party lodged an objection alleging fraud and the Supreme Election Council (YSK) on Monday ordered a rerun of the election on June 23.

Comedian Cem Yılmaz shared an image from his movie of the same name as the hashtag, #herşeyçokgüzelolacak – everything is going to be great - while actress Demet Akbağ, actor and director Yılmaz Erdoğan, musicians Gökhan Özoğuz and Sertab Erener also posted on Twitter using the hashtag.

“I'm 55 years old, I thought that I had seen it all in my country, I was wrong,” actor Cem Davran wrote.

“We are here and there is hope. Everything is going to be great,” alternative rock band Mor ve Ötesi posted.

“This is very saddening situation … our country doesn’t deserve this,’’ comedian Yılmaz said in another post.

Another well known actress Demet Akbağ, in a tweet, simply said, "everything is going to be all right."

Turkish musician of Armenian descent Hayko Bağdat posted a promise of a better future, tagging CHP's İmamoğlu.
