“Uber is finished” – Turkish taxi drivers

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has ordered changes in taxi regulations to bring in heavy penalties for providing unlicensed minicab services leading to authorities revoking licenses issued to Uber drivers as part of an attempt to appease taxi drivers in the run-up to presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24, Hürriyet newspaper said.

“As of today, Uber is finished,” it quoted Istanbul Taxi Drivers’ Professional Association President Eyüp Aksu as saying.

If an Uber vehicle were caught from now on, the driver would get points on their licence and a 3,006 Turkish lira fine, Aksu said.

Minicab firms were also having their licenses taken away, he said.

Uber issued a statement in response saying that it was working with all local stakeholders and was committed to continue working in Turkey.
