Turkish man self-immolates in Ankara over ’financial problems’

A 45-year old Turkish man on Wednesday set himself on fire in capital Ankara after shouting that he was unemployed and hungry, news site Dokuz8 Haber reported.

Witnesses in Ankara’s Kızılay district informed the police, who came and intervened using fire extinguishers, the news site said.

The man, whose name is still unknown, was later taken to a nearby hospital.

The incident follows the self-immolation of two men in Ankara last year citing economic problems.

The jobless rate is at 13 percent as of April, according to latest figures of the Turkish Statistical Institute.

Turkey endured a difficult year in 2018, with a currency crisis sparked by U.S. sanctions over imprisoned U.S. citizens in August leading to a lira slide of nearly 30 percent over the course of the year, followed by a technical recession in its final quarter. The economic downturn affected the labour market as companies started laying off staff.
