Turkish-American student elected to New Haven city council
WASHINGTON - Turkish-American student Hacıbey Çatalbaşoğlu of Yale University has been elected to New Haven city council at the age of only 19.
“The overall gap is to bridge the gap between Yale and New Haven,” he said during his campaign.
“And I’d do that in a variety of ways, such as creating programmes where Yale students would help out kids in the city.”
The student, whose parents both hail from the Black Sea town of Giresun, worked at his father’s pizza shop in New Haven while he was growing up.
Çatalbaşoğlu was initially planning to run as an independent, but later changed his mind and won the nomination for the Democratic Party in their primary.
