Trump's threats against Turkey surprised Secretary of State Pompeo - NBC

Threats by U.S. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence to impose sanctions on Turkey may have blindsided Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who had been involved in talks with the Turkish government to free jailed American pastor Andrew Brunson, NBC News reported on Friday.

Two State Department sources told NBC that Pompeo was surprised to hear the tough talk, while another senior official said there had been coordination in the administration behind the scenes.

Trump said on Twitter on Thursday that the United States would impose sanctions on Turkey in response to the detention of Brunson, who was moved to house arrest on Wednesday, after two years in prison facing charges of supporting both a banned Islamist group and left-wing Kurdish armed rebels.

"President Erdoğan and the Turkish government ... Release Pastor Andrew Brunson now or be prepared to face the consequences,” said on Thursday, speaking at a conference on religious freedom.
