Turkey to tell Tillerson trust is damaged in U.S. ties
Turkish officials will tell U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that trust in its NATO ally has been damaged by Washington’s support for Kurdish militants, Foreign Minister Mevlut Çavuşoğlu told broadcaster TGRT Haber in an interview.
“Our trust is damaged. We have to mend our trust. The contacts between us are important… When Tillerson comes we will share these ideas with him sincerely, we will share our expectations,” he said, according to Arab News.
Tillerson and U.S. National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster are due to visit Turkey next week, according to Turkish media. Çavuşoğlu did not say when exactly they would visit.
Ankara sees the People’s Protection Forces (YPG) in Syria as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), designated a terrorist organisation by the United States and the European Union.
“The United States should understand and meet our concerns,” Çavuşoğlu said. “You are cooperating with this terror organisation knowingly. And this poses a threat to us.”
