Turkish banker Atilla files appeal against US conviction

Turkish banker Mehmet Hakan Atilla sentenced to 32 months in prison for plotting to help Iran evade US sanctions took steps Friday to appeal his conviction in New York, Pulse News Agency reported

On Friday, a one-page notice appealing his conviction, not the sentence, was filed in US federal court in Manhattan, the first step in an appeals process.

The 47-year-old banker is the former executive of Halkbank, Turkey's largest government-owned public bank.

Atilla has been an inmate of New York's Metropolitan Correctonal Center for about a year, and was found guilty in five of six accounts including fraud, conspiracy and violating the United States sanctions on Iran on May 16.
