Turkish interior minister to Western allies: “You will get the slap of all time.”
Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu told a crowd in Trabzon on Sunday that Western powers playing games with Turkey would be punished.
“You will get the slap of all time,” he said. “You will be severely disappointed and you will leave this region at great cost.”
Soylu added that the Kurdish-majority Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG) taking the Syrian city Raqqa from the Islamic State (ISIS) was merely theatre scripted by the United States.
“ISIS leave there without any blood spilt, without anything happening, as if you could blow them away with a puff,” he said.
“And they want us to believe this scenario.”
Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ had more harsh words for the United States on Monday over a U.S. sanctions-busting prosecution of Iranian-Turkish gold trader Reza Zarrab and state Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla.
“The Zarrab case is a conspiracy against Turkey,” he said. “A conspiracy is being carried out against Turkey using Zarrab.”
As the suspects charged in the case already include former Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan, some in the Turkish government fear that the case could stretch to other senior figures or that it could lead to heavy fines for Halkbank, which is accused of having facilitated money laundering into Iran.
“I’m asking those conducting this trial, do you have evidence that directly incriminates Reza Zarrab or not?” Bozdağ said. “If you do, who brought you that evidence?”
