U.S. envoy Jeffrey to discuss Idlib, ISIS in Ankara

U.S. Special Envoy for Syria James Jeffrey, accompanied by Special Envoy for Syria Joel Rayburn, is scheduled to meet with senior Turkish officials to discuss “issues of mutual concern,” U.S. State Department said in a statement on Monday.

Jeffrey and Rayburn will be discussing the Syrian government offensive in Syria’s rebel-held Idlib following the death of five Turkish soldiers, according to the statement.

The meetings will also focus on the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for an “inclusive and Syrian-led political process,” the situation in northeast Syria where Turkey maintains Kurdish forces continue to engage in harassment fire, and “an enduring defeat of ISIS in Syria and Iraq.”

Following the meetings in Turkey, Jeffrey will continue to Munich, Germany on Feb. 13 to attend the Munich Security Conference, where the focus will be on the defeat of ISIS again.
