U.S. troops arrive Turkey for Syria joint patrol training

Turkey’s Defence Ministry announced on Tuesday the arrival of the first batch of U.S. military personnel who will take part in training for joint patrols in the northern Syrian town of Manbij.

The United States and Turkey agreed in June on a roadmap for Manbij, which Turkey wants to be cleared of Syrian Kurdish forces it sees as being affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has been fighting inside Turkey since 1984.

According to the roadmap, Turkish and U.S. forces will conduct joint patrols in Manbij to stabilise the region.

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said last month that Turkish forces would never enter Manbij city centre and that joint patrols would take place on the outskirts of the city.
