Municipality in eastern Turkey grants women menstrual leave

The municipality of Turkey’s eastern province of Tunceli has given women employees the right to a leave of absence during their menstrual cycles.

The provision, announced on Monday in a written statement by the municipality’s Women’s Council and Gender Equity Commission, allows for women staffers to take one designated day off each month for painful periods, news site T24 reported.

The commission said the provision was part of an effort by the municipality of Tunceli in creating an environment, which contributes to gender-equity in the workplace, it said.

Critics maintain offering paid menstrual leave to women risks making workplace inequality worse by leading to discrimination against women by employers.
