40 pct of Turkish youth say physical force against women acceptable - survey

A recent survey on Turkish youth by Sia Insight communication and media company revealed by that 40 percent of Turkey’s young population believe that it’s acceptable to slap a woman ‘’when necessary,’’ independent news site t24 reported.

The study conducted among 2000 youth aged 15-24 during 45 minute face-to-face interviews in the provinces of  Adana, Ankara, Antalya, Diyarbakır, Erzurum, Gaziantep, İstanbul, İzmir, Kayseri, Konya, Malatya, Manisa, Samsun, Tekirdağ and Trabzon found the reasons why it would be acceptable to slap a woman according to those surveyed as follows: Speaking to another man (8 percent); refusing to have sexual intercourse with her husband (6 percent); burning food on the stove (6 percent), neglecting the children (6 percent).

Some other interesting findings from the survey came from the answer to the question, ‘’Who would prefern not to be neighbors with?’’

The answers were as follows: Drug-users (37 percent), Homosexuals (29 percent), those engaged in prostitution (27 percent), alcohol drinkers (27 percent), convicted criminals (26 percent), members of Islamic religious movements (24 percent), transsexuals (22 percent), those who dress immodestly (19 percent), non-Muslims (17 percent), the mentally handicapped (15 percent), Atheists (14 percent), pet-owners (11 percent) and families where women don’t follow the Islamic dress code (7 percent).

The study also showed that 86 percent of youth aged 15-24  live with their families and only 9 percent of their mothers’ work full time.

Of those who don’t have a passport, 88 percent have no plans of obtaining one within the year, the survey found.

Twenty percent say they have never vacationed.

Only 1 percent have traveled abroad for vacationing purposes while 89 percent don’t speak a language other than Turkish. Sixty-one percent say they have never boarded a plane.

While 72 percent of those asked say they feel healthy, 76 percent say they haven’t been to a hospital in the past year.

Only 35 percent answered ‘’yes’’ to the question ‘’Did you brush your teet yesterday?’’ while 30 percent said ‘’yes’’ in response to the question ‘’Did you shower yesterday?’’

Of those surveyed, 83 percent said they have never received sexual education and of those who said they had received sexual education, 43 percent say they received information from the internet.

Forty-two percent of youth older than 18 were found to be smokekers while 88 percent said they don’t engage in kind of physical activity such as sports.

Turkey, which has a population of 81 million, is statistically classified among young populated countries, with a median age of 32 by 2018. In the EU, in comparison, the median age was almost 43 in 2016, according to the European Statistical Institute (EuroStat).
