International Women’s Day celebrated in Istanbul

Thousands have gathered around Taksim Square, one of the central points on Istanbul’s European side, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Images from BBC Türkçe’s live stream of the event showed crowds on Istiklal Caddesi, the famous street running off Taksim Square, dancing and chanting under banners and placards.

Turkish authorities have refused permission to hold women’s day events in cities across Turkey, citing security concerns, though permission was granted for the Istanbul demonstration. There was a strong police presence watching over the march, as is ever the case in Taksim and Istiklal Caddesi, but no police interventions have been reported.
