Women's Meeting of Turkey to be held in Istanbul on Jan. 5
Women from various parts of Turkey will gather in Istanbul on January 5-6 to attend the Women's Meeting of Turkey, Bianet reported on Tuesday.
The meeting is organised by the Women are Strong Together platform and 155 women's and LGBTI organisations signed the invitation statement. The motto for the gathering is: "We lay claim to our rights, lives and gains."
"Despite everything, we, as women and LGBTI+ individuals, are making a call to everyone to widen the bases of togetherness, raise our voices, be together and take strength from each other. Because we believe in each other, we believe in women and women's movement," a statement released by the platform said.
The platform said women will meet at the Women's Meeting of Turkey to support women's struggle, to give strength to each other, to increase their contact and to discuss how they can render their solidarity permanently.
More than 700 women from over 30 cities are expected to attend the meeting.
For years, women’s rights organisations in Turkey have sought to raise awareness about women's rights and the increase in violence against women over the last decade. According to local reports, from 2003 to 2010, Turkey witnessed a 1,400 percent increase in violence against women.
