Tourist-on-tourist killing over World Cup in Turkey
A Russian tourist is accused of killing a Ukrainian tourist in a fight over the World Cup match between Russia and Croatia in the Turkish tourist resort of Alanya, secularist newspaper Sözcü said.
The July 7 match ended 2-2 after extra time and went to penalties, and the two men were watching the match at their hotel in the resort.
When Croatia scored their winning goal, taking Russia out of the World Cup, 57-year-old Ukrainian national Andrey Sova loudly celebrated, leading Russian fan A.P. (30) to start a fight, the newspaper said.
At the end of the fight, which began with fists and kicking, Sova was taken to an intensive care unit where he died on July 14. A.P. was detained by gendarmes and remains in custody awaiting trial, Sözcü said.
