Islamic militia destroy Yazidi shrine in Syria’s Afrin - Afrin Post

Islamist militia have destroyed a Yazidi shrine in the northwestern Syrian district of Afrin, the Afrin Post website reported.

It said the attack on the shrine of Sheikh Rakab in the village of Shah Deira brought the total number of Yazidi shrines destroyed in the region to 17.

Turkish troops and their Syrian Islamist allies seized control of Afrin from Syrian Kurdish forces in March last year.

Yazidis, an ethno-religious minority, have reported the destruction and vandalism of numerous holy shrines in the area since.

Kurdish groups have said that Sheikh Barakat, the most important shrine, was used as a military base during the 2018 Turkish offensive.
