17 detained in Turkish Zarrab investigation

Police have now detained a total of 17 people as part of a Turkish investigation into Iranian-Turkish gold dealer Reza Zarrab, state news agency Anadolu said.

Previously the agency had announced the detention of three members of Zarrab’s retinue in Turkey on suspicion of forwarding faked documents to Zarrab to use as evidence in a U.S. Iranian sanctions-busting case.

Zarrab was initially the chief suspect in the case, which is being heard in New York, but made a plea deal and became a witness, testifying to the role of many top Turkish government officials and banking executives in the scheme.
