Turkey issues warrant for former opposition MP over U.S. sanctions case

A Turkish court has issued a warrant for a former member of parliament for the opposition Republican People’s Party and a banking auditor at the request of the Istanbul chief prosecutor’s office, Cumhuriyet newspaper said on Tuesday.

Aykan Erdemir, who now works at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington and Osman Zaki Canıtez are accused of “bringing fake evidence and documents from Turkey to the U.S.” in relation to the case of Halkbank executive Mehmet Hakan Atilla.

Atilla is due to go on trial in New York on Dec. 4 accused of collaborating with Turkish government and banking officials to help Iranian-Turkish gold dealer Reza Zarrab undermine U.S. sanctions on Iran.
